The Punjab Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has officially approved the province’s first comprehensive Child Protection Policy, marking a significant milestone in the protection of children’s rights.
The policy, developed by the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau, aims to provide a structured and effective roadmap to prevent child abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation. It was approved during a recent cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister.
Chairperson of the Child Protection Bureau, Sarah Ahmad, stated that the policy reflects the Punjab government’s strong commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and underscores the Chief Minister’s prioritization of child welfare.
She noted that work on the implementation framework began a year ago with the development of a case management system, while the initial draft of the policy was submitted to the government two years ago via the Home Department.
UNICEF Pakistan provided technical support in drafting the policy, ensuring alignment with international standards.
In the past, efforts to develop a child protection policy in Punjab faltered due to political disinterest, lack of budgetary support, and institutional challenges.
However, under the current administration, the initiative was given strategic importance and has now received cabinet-level approval.
Social experts and child rights advocates have hailed the policy as a landmark achievement. They believe it will not only help prevent crimes against children but also lay the foundation for a safer and more supportive environment across the province.
The Punjab government is expected to soon roll out district-level implementation plans and awareness campaigns to ensure effective enforcement of the policy.
