Pakistan Business Forum (PBF) Chairperson (Women Wing) Ayesha Farooqui said on Saturday highlighted the significant potential of handicrafts from South Punjab and Balochistan in creating employment opportunities, particularly for rural women. She urged the government to bolster support for the handicraft sector, facilitating artisans’ access to both local and international markets.
Speaking to the media, Farooqui mentioned that traditional crafts are widely produced across these provinces and enjoy nationwide popularity. With increased governmental backing, these crafts could become substantial income sources for local women.
She called on the government to actively promote handicrafts from underserved rural and semi-urban areas by organising exhibitions, trade fairs, and craft bazaars domestically and internationally. Such initiatives would help open new markets and showcase Pakistan’s cultural diversity.
Farooqui also stressed the importance of skill development and capacity building for artisans, alongside implementing value addition strategies to enhance the quality of handicrafts.
She proposed that provincial governments establish permanent handicraft stalls to boost revenue and generate employment, thereby connecting people from various regions with Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage.
“The government should provide domestic skills assessment opportunities and support local communities involved in the handicraft and trade sectors,” she added.
Farooqui noted that while Pakistan boasts a rich history, culture, and exceptional craftsmanship, it faces challenges in accessing international markets. “We need to reassess our approach to global promotion by increasing awareness through exhibitions and leveraging digital platforms like e-marketing,” she said.
She concluded by stating that promoting the handicrafts sector is not only vital for women’s economic empowerment but also plays a key role in preserving and innovating Pakistan’s traditions and culture.
