Chitral triumphs over Gilgit in Shandur Polo Festival 2025 final

The Shandur Polo Festival 2025 concluded in spectacular fashion on Sunday, as Chitral defeated Gilgit 9–7 in the final match played at the world’s highest polo ground before a crowd of thousand.

The final took place before thousands of spectators at Shandur Pass often referred to as the “roof of the world,” at an altitude of 12,000 feet, attracting local crowds and foreign tourists alike.

This year, Gilgit’s ‘A’ team displayed a notably improved performance compared to previous editions. However, Chitral’s team played a solid defensive game, successfully blocking multiple goal attempts and maintaining their lead to secure the win.

Held from June 20 to 22, the festival was organised with the joint support of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Government, Gilgit-Baltistan Government, Pakistan Army, and Frontier Corps Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (North).

The final day’s closing ceremony was attended by Lieutenant General Umar Ahmad Bukhari, Corps Commander Peshawar, who participated as the chief guest.

Thousands attended the grand finale, including many international visitors. In keeping with tradition, the Pakistan Army’s elite SSG ‘Shahbaz’ team executed a spectacular free-fall parachute display, while the Army School of Physical Training, Kakul, impressed with a vibrant paragliding demonstration over the scenic landscape.

Adding to the festivities, a traditional Kalasha dance was performed, much to the delight of the crowd. The cultural showcase received enthusiastic applause and reflected the diverse heritage of the region.

During the ceremony, the chief guest presented awards and honours to players from both teams. In his speech, Lieutenant General Bukhari thanked all spectators, organisers, and especially the foreign tourists for attending and supporting the festival.

He also praised the civil administration, security forces, and local authorities for ensuring the success and safety of the event.
